We use the following modalities when working with clients:
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
A drug free, mind and body approach. CBT works by changing people’s attitudes and behavior by focusing on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes that are held (a person’s cognitive processes) and how these processes relate to the way a person behaves, as a way of dealing with emotional problems. CBT is broken down into two parts: cognition (what you think) and behaviour (what you do).
Solution Focused Therapy
Focuses on a person’s present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences. This method takes the approach that you know what you need to do to improve your own life and, with the appropriate coaching and questioning, are capable of finding the best solutions.
Person Centred Therapy
Is a nondirective, empathic approach that empowers and motivates the client. It is based on the idea that the client knows what is best and the therapist’s role is to facilitate an environment in which the client can bring about positive change by following the clients lead whenever possible.
Art Therapy
Art therapy involves the use of creative techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, colouring, or sculpting. This method enables clients to process emotion by reflecting on and sharing their feelings and thoughts. Clients can “decode” the nonverbal messages, symbols, and metaphors often found in these art forms, which should lead to a better understanding of their feelings. We commonly use this method on our younger clients as it can facilitate clients into identifying feelings and behaviours that they may not know exist, or are not able to process or talk through.
Narrative
Narrative Therapy separates a client from their problems by helping them to identify their core values. Personal experiences shape us, by being aware of our own narrative we then are able to develop an understanding of how certain ‘experiences’ have and will impact on our decision making. Narrative Therapy enables the client to create ‘alternative’ or ‘preferred’ storylines.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
EFT is the emotional version of acupuncture. It works by stimulating energy points on the surface of the skin (by tapping on them) which, when paired with specific psychological procedures, can realign the body’s energy system.
Strength Based Therapy
Strengths Based Therapy guides the client towards retelling their own personal history of traumas, stressors, and pain. It puts an emphasis on yourself as a survivor than as a victim, and more emphasis on your strengths, than your weakness.
